Founded in 581 BC as the Greek city of Akragas, Agrigento has been Roman, Arab, and Norman in turn, and carries all of it at once: temples on the ridge, a medieval old town built into the hillside above them, and a scatter of hill towns worth the drive. In 2025 it was named Italy's Capital of Culture, a good excuse to slow down and stay a few days rather than pass through for an afternoon.
