Why Visit Agrigento

Agrigento has been lived in for over 2,600 years, first as the great Greek city of Akragas, then Roman, Arab, and Norman in turn. That layered history isn't locked away in a museum, it's under your feet on every street of the old town: in a medieval street plan inherited from the Arab-founded Rabato quarter, in churches built directly on top of ancient temples, in the sweet pistachio couscous a handful of cloistered nuns still bake the same way they did centuries ago. An official self-guided walking system, complete with QR codes at every stop, now maps two whole routes through it.

Add a competitive food scene, lively bars, some of Sicily's best beaches, and a few days here goes a lot further than an afternoon at the temples.

Sand, Cliffs & Turquoise Water

White marlstone cliffs, quiet coves, and long open stretches of sand, all strung along the coast a short drive south of the city. Thirteen beaches, from the postcard-famous to the ones only locals know and visit.
