A remote mountain town in the Sicani hills, well off the usual tourist routes, famous for two crafts that have survived here for centuries. The Virgadamo Bell Foundry has cast bells by hand since the 1500s using traditional methods, and remains the only foundry of its kind still working in southern Italy.
Burgio is also known for distinctive hand-painted ceramics in green and sandy earth tones, which you can watch being made in local workshops and buy directly from the artisans. A small ceramics museum in town rounds out the visit.
