A small inland town best known as the home of Leonardo Sciascia, one of Sicily's most influential 20th-century writers, whose novels and essays on Sicilian society and the mafia remain widely read today. The town keeps his memory alive with a dedicated foundation and archive.
Racalmuto also has a long mining history, part of Sicily's sulphur-mining belt that once employed thousands across this stretch of the province, and a hilltop castle, the Castelluccio, overlooking the town.
