One of Sicily's most dramatically sited towns, built across a jagged limestone ridge with a ruined castle at its summit and views for miles in every direction on a clear day, reputedly as far as Africa in exceptional conditions.
The town's most notable historical moment came in 1302, when the Peace of Caltabellotta was signed here, ending the War of the Sicilian Vespers and dividing control of Sicily between the crowns of Aragon and Anjou.
